Historic Wedding in Rare Video Footage.
This video is from March 26, 1942, when the wedding of Indira and Feroze Gandhi took place at Anand Bhavan in Allahabad. In the video, you can also see Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru along with his sister Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit. Indira and Feroze, dressed simply, can be seen sitting under the canopy. Feroze Gandhi belonged to a Parsi family, and his father Jehangir Fardun Gandhy and their family were also involved in the country’s freedom struggle. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology, Feroze began writing “Gandhi” in front of his name instead of “Gandhy” to denote his connection to Gandhi’s philosophy.
During the independence movement, Nehru’s wife Kamala Nehru fainted during a protest outside Feroze’s college. Feroze saw this and rushed to help, which led to his introduction to Indira Priyadarshini Nehru. He left college and joined the independence movement. Nehru’s wife, Kamala Nehru, was against this intercaste marriage. However, when Feroze’s family agreed to the marriage according to Hindu customs and rituals, the wedding of Indira and Feroze took place on March 26, 1942.
Some people mistakenly consider Feroze to be Muslim,
but he is not a Muslim and he belonged to the Parsi community. He passed away on September 8, 1960, at the age of only 48 due to a heart attack.
